LWS is a nonprofit. The tuition paid does not cover all our expenses. Our largest expense is compensating the wonderful teachers and staff who make the school possible. For us, the unique Education for Life philosophy is a mission to which we have dedicated our lives. We receive salaries that are roughly 70 percent less than that of comparable teachers and staff in other public or even many private schools. We also have a low teacher-to-student ratio so tuition covers roughly 80 percent of total expenses. So we must rely on yearly fundraising and donations to cover the rest.
LWS also tries to accept all students who want what we have to offer. This means that not everyone can afford to pay full tuition so we offer work exchange opportunities to help financially. When we can, we also offer scholarships. Both of these mean less income to the school and so we again use donations and fundraising to cover this service. How many scholarships and work exchange opportunities we are able to give depends mainly on the donations we receive.
We started Living Wisely Thrift and Gift Store as a community outreach, as an experiential learning situation for our older children, and as a means to provide LWS with income. The school will, in time, receive profits from the store; unfortunately, we do not expect any profits from the store for the 2011-2012 school year.
To help forward our Education for Life mission, to help our teachers and to help fund scholarships, please donate as much as you feel you can.
